Angels in the heights adore him, Ye behold him face to face; Sun and moon bow down before him: Dwellers all in time and space, Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace.

I Can't Say No
(with apologies to those people who thought this post was going to be about that song from 'Oklahoma'. That song is actually entitled "I Cain't Say No". Look it up!)
I have previously blogged about struggling with being assertive and with saying no. "You don't have to do that, you know. You can say no..." I've lost count of the number of times that people have said that to me over the years... not sure if this was a genuine concern about my well-being, or if it was something else...
However, I know too well what they mean. Saying no is especially tough for introverts like myself, because I personally hate conflict. It is far easier to "go with the flow" and not to resist. Saying yes is a logical way to keep the peace. Despite the fact that I can often end up worse off at the end of the day - overwhelmed and with low energy.
However, sometimes the main reason why I don't say no - is a strong conviction that I want to - or need to - say YES!

However, sometimes the main reason why I don't say no - is a strong conviction that I want to - or need to - say YES!
- YES to helping others, in making this world a better place
- YES, even though I don't get paid for it
- YES to standing up and being counted
- YES, even though there is a risk it may make be ill or overtired (an increasing factor at the moment!)
- YES to making a difference.
That's why I can't always say no.
I've blogged about this today, as there have been a few voluntary jobs I've had to drop off over the past few years as it's just become too much for me. And I suspect that as I get older, there may be one or two more things that will need to go.
Oh, and by the way - if I do say no - please realise that I've not made the decision lightly. Putting pressure on me to 'change my mind' won't go down too well...
Thanks for listening.

Saturday Catch-Up - 26th January 2019
January has seen the family get to grips with a heck of a lot of baggage. Physical and emotional!
Spring might well be the season of cleaning, but we've started early, well into Winter. Every week this year our family has tackled a different room in the house, and ruthlessly culled things. Recycling, re-evaluating, re-ordering or binning. It's making a difference.
I've blogged before about the emotional baggage that we unearth as we go. I think I'm actually in a better place than I used to be, as this time around I've found 'letting go' to be a much easier exercise than previous sessions. Far less painful. Mementos trigger memories which trigger emotions. But the memories this time around seem to be predominantly happier ones. I've smiled and laughed more. And thanks to my family, kept on going.
Still a whole bunch of rooms to go.

Set The World On Fire
“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” - Catherine of Siena
Make a difference in this world.
I am the candle of the Lord,
with truth and love more powerful than sword;
O fan the flame, its single gleam diffuse,
And let my spirit be the light that You can use;
I am the candle of the Lord!
Light me!
(lyrics by Joy Webb)

Dare To Be Different, Choose To Be Careful
"I dare to be different, I dare to believe;
I dare to be different, God's Spirit receive.
I dare to be different, my life sacrificed;
I dare to be different by living like Christ."
(lyrics: Dick Grommenhoek)

I appreciate the need to live a life that is different from other people. Jesus sends his followers out to make a real difference in this world.
But we also need to be mindful of others. Not only being aware of other people's opinions or beliefs, but sharing your own with tact and diplomacy. We need to take care to do this wisely... remember, Jesus said:-
"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." (Matthew 10:16, NIV)
Sounds like quite a juggling act, doesn't it?
A snake is a keen hunter, wary, attentive, wise and yet still eager to learn. They possess tremendous subtlety, and yet with the ability to win against overwhelming odds.
A dove is innocent, harmless, meek and gentle. Remember when the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove?
The challenge - my challenge - is to find the ways of witnessing without apology, without giving offence.
And without abdicating the responsibility to others.
Be different. But be careful...

So, What Happens Now?
Life is finally getting back to normal following the recent Parliamentary election campaign. There has been loads of opportunities to read literature from the candidates, chat to them on the doorstep and on the street corner, listen to what they had to say in the hustings, and to prayerfully consider where to put your cross on the ballot paper. It's been interesting.But what happens now? A week after polling day...
During the last month I've received literature reminding me of my duty to "Show Up" on the day to vote. But I'm increasingly convicted of my need to "show up’ in everyday life too.
Being there, making a difference in the world.
Sure, I'm don't feel that I'm in a position to influence anyone on a grand scale, through the world of politics. However, I know that I can make a difference on a small scale, in fact wherever I am. I can stand up and be counted.
And sometimes, you have to stop and ask a few hard questions.

Making A Difference
"One man can make a difference..." - Wilton Knight (Richard Basehart) from the original pilot of 'Knight Rider' (1982)
I have spent an interesting week at home, reviewing the past year over and over again in my mind. An unfortunate side-effect of my period of recuperation is the sudden acquisition of bucket-loads of spare time. I can't drive; can't do those little odd jobs in the house. I am encouraged by family to 'take it easy'. So I took time to catch up with friends and relatives, find up what they are up to. At this time of year, you get updates via cards, or on Facebook.
Unfortunately, this made me feel quite sad. I started taking myself to task for all the things that I have failed to do during this year. Friends with which I have lost contact; family members who tease you about some event or other you've missed; good opportunities that slip through your grasp or pass you by. All those things danced around in my mind.
I spent some time in prayerful reflection of all these things. The words of 1 Peter 5:8-9 came to mind while I was doing this. And - with His help -I realised that there is quite another way of looking at this...
Instead of concentrating on those things that I failed to do, I realised that I should also be looking at all those things that I actually did! All the places I went to. What about considering all the people that I helped this year by doing the things I do - who would be there for them if I didn't do what I do?
Yes, there are things I can't do, can't seem to find the time to do. Sorry if I let you down. I'm trying the best way that I know to make a difference in this world by what I do in His name. I want to make a difference - and to continue to do so in 2011.
Can one man make a difference? Yes, I can.
"It's easy to make a buck. It's a lot tougher to make a difference." - Tom Brokaw
"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." - William James
This is my favourite...
"I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world." - Mother Teresa
1 Peter 5:8-9 (New International Version, ©2010)
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
Happy New Year.
