P is for the Prophet's Song

The Prophet’s Song was released by Queen. Guitarist Brian May wrote the song in the 1970s after he had a dream about the Great Flood - depicted in the book of Genesis, as well as in many other ancient manuscripts. May's lyrics even mention the return of the white dove, which was the bird that Noah released to see if the waters had gone down, and which returned after seven days with an olive branch in its beak. The working title was 'People Of The Earth,' a phrase that came to May in his dream and made it into the lyric. At over eight minutes in length, is also Queen's longest song with vocals.

People sometimes do stupid things. Unexpectedly, perhaps catastrophically. Things that you simply don't expect them to.

I suppose it's understandable. We've all been given the freedom to do as we please.

You can try to advise them, try and steer them in the right direction.

But what if they do something completely bizarre?

Things that defy logic.

Like throwing away one perfectly good relationship to pursue another with someone else more 'exciting'. (This is not someone in my family, or even in my close circle of friends. But it hurts me deeply - somehow...)

I'm caught up in their landslide. Is there any escape?

I can't undo it. Reality simply doesn't have a reset or rewind button; when you make a mistake you’ve got to live with it.

I can't live their life for them, either.

So why do I feel sad today? Why do I care?

Y is for Weird Al Yankovic

Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic is an American singer-songwriter who specialises in satire and parody. There are a whole host of works to his name, and he has earned three Grammy Awards and several gold and platinum records. I've been an admirer of his work for a while. Check out 'Bohemian Polka' (a cover of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen), 'Bob' (in the style of Bob Dylan, but composed entirely of palindromes), 'Yoda' (a parody of 'Lola' by The Kinks, retelling the plot of 'Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back'), and 'Trapped in the Drive-Thru' (a parody of 'Trapped in the Closet' by R. Kelly). The last one is a favourite of my son, who introduced it to me!

Queen were formed in London in 1971, originally consisting of Freddie Mercury, (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (lead guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Initially a heavy rock group, they soon developed a popularity which brought them firmly into the mainstream. Best known for the timeless classic "Bohemian Rhapsody", the group produced many other great records, as well as work on soundtrack albums for films such as "Flash Gordon" and "Highlander". The group is guaranteed a prominent place in music history.
