nylon (noun) : an artificial substance used especially to make clothes, ropes, and brushes.
The product was trademarked by the chemical company DuPont in 1938. They went through an extensive process to generate names for its new product.
A persistent urban legend exists that the name is derived from an amalgamation of the cities of "New York" and "London"; however, that's simply isn't true. No organisation in London was ever involved in the research and production of nylon.
